What does "research use only / not for human consumption" actually mean?

"Research use only" (RUO) is a labeling and compliance statement, not a safety or quality guarantee. Vendors use it because the compounds are not FDA-approved drugs; the label signals the product is sold for laboratory use and is not authorized, tested, or intended for use in people. The FDA has made clear this wording does not exempt a product from drug regulations or make human use lawful — agencies look at how a product is actually marketed and used, not just its label. So RUO tells you what the product legally is not (an approved, human-use drug); it says nothing about purity, sterility, or safety, which only independent testing can address. Treat it as a legal boundary, not reassurance.
